SKY DETECTOR

The answer of course is ghosts, witches, giant bats, the Grim Reaper, and ancient missing warplanes flying around the earth on eternal bombing missions. Why don’t we hear more about this stuff? Because what happens at the Cheyenne Mountain Halloween Party stays at Cheyenne Mountain Halloween Party. Incidentally, any mountain named “Cheyenne” definitely has some Indian graves underneath, which might help to explain the high levels of supernatural activity that occur there.

Certainly all that fancy pants equipment detects some interesting stuff. Based on countless TV shows and movies about ghosts, it doesn’t take much more than a old TV or a transistor radio to pull in communications from the Other Side. Heck, even an old board game from Parker Brothers will do the trick. Now imagine having the Hubble Telescope of spirit detection sitting at your fingertips. The place should be renamed to Witch Mountain.

AIR FORCE WINGS

In case you are wondering about the eagles, there is no great mystery there. Just as the Navy has attempted to utilize dolphins in the defense of our country (by blowing them up, the jerks), these birds work for the Air Force — killing fish, making horrible screeching noises, and symbolizing patriotism.

Just a few more days till Halloween! Do you have your Silver Shamrock mask ready? (there is a reference to that reference in this cartoon, BTW). There may be an extra cartoon next week if I find some extra time and work efficiently, otherwise, Happy Halloween and see you in November for another horror comedy comic from Grinsane!

HAMMER TIME

Some Halloween costumes require more than a simple mask, they require the performer to actually become the role. This isn’t a much of challenge if you are already goth 365 days a year and your costume is a witch (and you already are one). But a decent Pinhead, now that’s a challenge. You need more than a creepy Rubik’s cube and a black leather man dress to make a convincing entrance to the Halloween gala. You need galvanized steel and genuine suffering. Fetch the hammer and a box of 6 penny nails.

Always, too, when it comes to Halloween costumes, there is the girlfriend/boyfriend factor. When you have a significant other who loves Halloween, your days of costume independence are over. No more simply picking up a Captain Kirk mask at the local hardware store. You are now a team going forward. If your wife goes as Princess Leah, no doubt you are going as Darth Vader (or at least Luke if you can’t afford a decent mask and six inch platform shoes).

BACKUP CENOBYTES NEEDED FOR PROMINENT PINHEAD

Have you ever worn a costume that you had no say in, that was all your significant other’s idea? Have you ever been someone’s Halloween accessory? I confess, I’m guilty of roping others into my costume theme, most notably the year that I convinced my wife to go as “Tory zombie wife” to match my British redcoat zombie. We were living in Boston at the time, and spent our Halloween in Salem — it had to be done!

SPEAK OF THE DEVIL

I think it’s fair to say that if your child is possessed by the Evil One, and you solicit the help of a priest, stay in the room to keep an eye on things during the ceremony.

Seriously, can you find a reliable priest for an exorcism anymore? And by reliable, I mean one that isn’t a demon himself? Surely there has been an uptick in untreated demonic possession since these priests started getting outed. People are afraid to let them in the house, much less be alone with their kids, giving the true hell spawn unfettered access to your offspring, resulting in a nonstop stream of blasphemy and projectile vomit. Admittedly, some of the things these possessed children say are kind of funny, cute even, but that infernal pea soup barf is almost impossible to scrape off the walls.

Beware! — Beware of creepers amongst the clergy

Now that we’ve discussed the church, let’s talk about the Exorcist, one of the few movies I find truly terrifying. I rarely watch this film because I end up seeing little Linda Blair Regan MacNeil’s creepy possessed face in the shadows for at least a month after I view it. In fact, while I was drawing this cartoon (which took forever, since four panels is four times the work that I usually put in), my wife put on the film and I told her no way, change the movie, and we watched Species instead — a movie in which the greatest horror is listening to Ben Kingsley attempt to speak English with an American accent.

XENOBREATH

Smells like rotten human, dead cat, and radiator fluid. Kind of like a port-o-potty at a NASCAR race.

I based this comic on the iconic scene from Alien 3 where Ripley comes cheek-to-face with her biomechanical nemesis (a xenomorph, in the Alien parlance). However, instead depicting the bald, military Ripley from that film, I drew her more like the original Ripley – with her amazing mop. I wasn’t going to let the question of cinematic accuracy distract me from the pleasure of cartooning a fantastic hairdo.

CERTS IN SPACE

Shaving Ripley bald may have been the first mistake of Alien 3, a notorious box office flop. Actually, I think all but the ending of the movie (heresy) is plenty okay, especially compared to some of what has followed. Truly the Alien franchise is a classic example of “nothing beats the original.” However, the “Alien kiss” scene in 3 has definitely transcended the movie it was hatched in and withstood the test of time, not to mention sending a message to future astronauts: bring extra breath mints.

This cartoon was a last minute addition while I continue work on my epic “Attack of the Late Summer” ants series (three thematically related cartoons detailing my ongoing battle with the sinister ants who keep invading the house).

I always knew Lucy was a demon. Getting the words right is very important when invoking demons from ancient tomes and scrolls.

LUCYFER RISING

If we’ve learned anything from watching the Evil Dead movies, it should be that one must always pronounce the words right when reading ancient texts. This isn’t an easy task, of course, especially with “deadite” languages like Latin and Aramaic, and it’s even more challenging when dealing with a purely magical one, like the Black Speech of Sauron.

Invocations, therefore, are best left to experts like the ones depicted in this comic. This is the third time the Cult of Crepuscular Creeps have appeared in Grinsane, and they only getting more “effective” with their sinister Black Arts.

At this point you may be wondering… Lucy, really, how did it ever go so wrong? When did charming Lucy ever become demonic hellspawn? What’s next, Hellhound Snoopy ?(hrm, need to add that to the cartoon idea folder…)

Think back to those endless pranks and tricks on Charlie Brown – yanking that football away, week after week, followed by that demented smile. Truly, Lucy’s earthly presence has always been a mere avatar of something more sinister, something sorcerously evil lurking in the fiery depths below…
