Insect photography comic cartoon

Photographing insects takes more than a five thousand dollar macro lens and making sure you don’t step on the bugs — you need amazing patience and the ability to control large numbers of creatures that squiggle, bite, and fly annoyingly around in circles; creatures that will do anything in their power to disrupt your composition. And for those of you who think you are hot stuff just because you can capture the gleam in the eye of a dragonfly at 300 meters, have you ever tried photographing an entire family of flies in a studio setting? According to this website a single housefly can lay over 500 eggs in a five day period so try keeping that entire family in frame and getting them to smile at the same time.

Not strictly a horror cartoon this week although I wanted to do something semi gross with maggots and this is what I came up with. Why maggots? I figured they would be fun to draw (and easy). I was wrong. Trying to capture the distinct personality of each grub with a just a few simple lines is a near impossible task.

Spider Boxing Comic Cartoon

Just as brutal as it is confusing!

There’s a bit of a double joke in today’s cartoon:

1) how confusing would it be for spiders to box? Just think of all those arms (or are they legs?), jabbing, hooking, crossing… Not to mention trying to get all of those spider-sized gloves on the arms (or are they legs?) of the combatants.

2) Finally, imagine being the poor arachnid announcing the slugfest. What a job that would be not only with eight arms (or are they legs?) on each opponent but anywhere from zero to 12 eyes depending on the species of spider (most have eight).

A Chelicera is a spider jaw

In case you were wondering. Spiders have two of them, known collectively as chelicerae.

Science.

What kind of comics do spiders read?

Uh, webcomics, like this one.
