DEATH IS A CIRCUS

Especially when you feed on clowns. When attending the circus, one should avoid the food entirely, or at least stick with peanuts, popcorn, and red-blooded creatures like trapeze artists and lion tamers.

BARFUM & BAILEY

I recently watched the really great Hammer horror film, Vampire Circus, which provided inspiration for this cartoon. That said, there is nothing in Vampire Circus that relates to this cartoon other than the words “Vampire” and “Circus.” But that’s all the inspiration required in the Grinsane Asylum to spend hours meticulously coloring clown barf in Photoshop.

WHEN THE KILLER’S AWAY, THE COUNSELORS WILL PLAY

A lot can change in 10 years. Skinny dipping Suitors are now everywhere and the cafeteria has been turned into a meth lab. Jason hasn’t cleaned up Camp Crystal Lake since 2009 and the Millennials have moved in with their 21st century drugs and Comic-Con inspired sex practices. What are the film producers waiting for? Spin up that 13th movie already, it’s time for camp cleanup.

CAMP CRYSTAL METH

This whole cartoon began around that high brow idea for a caption. Crazy-eyed meth heads were going to be chasing Jason through the forest instead of the other way around. And then bong smoking furries with duck flippers showed up and the whole cartoon pivoted on its heels. That’s how these things work sometimes.

DOES IT SPARK JOY?

I don’t know, does it include spark plugs and make a lot of noise? Does it blend? Really, there is no reason for anyone to possess more than a dozen dead skin masks, especially an insane man child living in a remote part of Texas — there just aren’t enough social opportunities out there requiring that many changes of face.

NETFLIX AND STIHL

I haven’t seen the Marie Kondo show. No desire. I like my unwieldy hoard of books. I like having a garage full of broken tools. I’ve still got power cables for every computer I’ve owned since 1995. I’ve got original Heavy Metal magazines from the 80s and Freak Brothers comics from the 70s and they aren’t going anywhere without a fight!

I feel like my cartoons are getting darker lately. Time for something more cutesy? I blame everything on the cats!

GRANDPA’S LAST CHRISTMAS?

Man-children get so excited when they open their gifts. Usually the joy on their faces outweighs the destruction they cause, but this year may be different as Leatherface spins ecstatically around the living room with his new chainsaw. Power tools are always a poor choice of present for the mentally deranged.

Is this finally the end of Grandpa Sawyer, wheelchair-bound patriarch of the murderous family of Texas cannibals? And he hasn’t even unwrapped his new hammer yet. Fortunately, Gramps can move that chair when he needs to. Hopefully when the smoke clears no one will have suffered any permanent damage and the family can sit down to a nice Christmas dinner of human steak and sausage.

Speaking of family, I’m busy hosting my own this week (and cooking tonight, mmmm…), so this will likely be the only cartoon this week. Check back next week for a special New Year’s Eve edition of Grinsane, after which I plan to resume my regular Friday postings. Happy Holidays!

Nothing like dinner and a sunset!

This started off as a simple cartoon that eventually grew more complicated as more and more ants entered the picture. Originally the ants were pretty simple but I ended up reworking the comic today to give them more personality — as well as cutlery. Being devoured alive by ants has to be one of the more terrible ways to die, although there is always the possibility of it happening in a beautiful location and enjoying a glorious sunset in the process.

If the joke isn’t quite clear, please note that only one cowboy is capable of actually seeing the sunset, thanks to some serendipitous ocular positioning…
